Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy pupils celebrate town history with giant art piece
PUPILS at a Crayford school are celebrating the town’s past with a giant art piece.
Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy students are creating the 5m x 3m paisley mosaic to be installed in the floor of the new secondary school building.
Designed by famous mosaic artist Gary Drostle - who created the Erith Fish Sculpture - the piece is based on the primary and secondary pupil’s designs for the Fabric of Our Town project.
Crayford was famous for its paisley fabric printing factory and Gary incorporated some of these original prints into the design.
Head of Art Lucy Caddel said: "The mosaic will use at least 30,000 tiles and each tile will be split at least once.
"Every pupil and member of staff will have the opportunity to lay at least one tile.
"Once finished, the mosaic will be fitted into the floor during the summer holiday and will create much interest for many years to come."
