AN APPLICATION to build an entertainment marquee at a Bexley hotel has been rejected after homeowners feared it could turn their street into "a public urinal."

The Holiday Inn Hotel, in Southwold Road, submitted the application to Bexley Council applying to serve alcohol and play music inside the marquee until 12:45am on Friday and Saturday nights.

Although the application only sought permission to hold licensable activities 12 times per year, nine homeowners objected.

One resident, who lives in Farm Vale, said people leaving the hotel already use the road as a toilet and the entertainment marquee would only add to problems.

Councillors sitting on the licensing sub-committee rejected the application on the basis they had not been persuaded the applicant would be able to prevent public nuisance and promote public safety.

They said there was no enough parking at the hotel and concluded the music "would be the equivalent of placing an amplifier in a field."
