Three dogs found in “appalling” conditions were reunited in Biggin Hill after more than a year recovering.

The trio of greyhounds known as ‘Allotment 3’ were rescued nearly a year ago from Durham.

Around 10 years old, Missy, Tigger and Old Boy - later renamed Shadow -were reunited at Biggin Hill’s Foal Farm on Sunday (April 12).

The centre rescued them after their owner could no longer care for them, and left them to fend for themselves.

Missy was rehomed a few weeks after arrival, Tigger found a new home just before Christmas while Shadow went home with volunteer Liz Reid.

Ms Reid said: “I went to meet them the next day and the state they were in was shocking.

“They were wafer thin, they smelt dreadful, were filthy dirty, they were covered in fleas and their breath smelt awful from having rotting teeth.

“A friend and I bathed them and the water running off them was brown.

“When we looked at the water in the bath, it was like someone had sprinkled black pepper all over it, dead fleas.”

All of Missy’s teeth have now had to be removed, but they have since made a full recovery.

Ms Reid added: “We don’t know how long they were there but we think it was at least a year, it was appalling.

“We think they were used in the racing industry, then like with so many greyhounds they’re dumped when they’re no longer making any money.

“The man kept them for coursing we think, then tried to sell them when he didn’t want them anymore.”

MORE TOP STORIES Despite being back in shape, Ms Reid says that Shadow is still afraid of the dark and is not accustomed to dog food.

She added: “They clearly recognised each other, they were really happy to see each other.

“It’s testament to how dogs can recover if given the proper care and attention.”
