A baby fox rescued from certain death in Blackheath is now being nursed back to health.

Gilbert the 5 week old fox was found on Shooters Hill near Gilbert Close on Saturday in a terrible condition after possibly being attacked by a cat.

Fox Project director Trevor Williams said: "It looks as if he was grabbed by a cat and then dropped.

"He was obviously left out there for quite some time after being dropped, when we found him he was in a bad state, he was on the edge."

Mr Williams revealed that whilst they were worried about Gilbert's health when they found him at 6pm, he expected Gilbert to make a full recovery.

He added: "He's stable now and doing ok, his wounds are superficial and he's on the mend."

Gilbert is now on a course of antibiotics and a high protein diet.

The Fox Project group stray cubs with others to make up a new litter, usually of around five cubs.

They remain with the trust until the end of summer and are then rehabbed back into the wild in rural settings or on the outskirts of suburbs.

By that time, when Gilbert is around five months old, the cubs will be fully wild and will make their way in the world as if they were raised naturally.
