Olympics and Chislehurst bridge blamed for Orpington road failure

A GAS company has blamed the Olympics and work on Chislehurst Road bridge for its failure to fix leaks on Crofton Lane, Orpington.

Since 2010 Southern Gas Networks has been continuously working on the road and over the summer decided to replace the old pipe "once and for all".

Temporary measures have been used by SGN untill now to correct the fractured piping.

However, SGN claims Bromley Council stopped work because of ongoing construction on the Chislehurst Road bridge and the need to keep vital Olympic routes open.

SGN spokeswoman, Chloe Boyce, said: "The council asked us to stop work because of the Chislehurst Bridge and then the Olympics came.

"Some routes were prioritised during the Olympics so we had to take that into consideration too.

"This is one of our older pipes so we wanted to replace it once and for all but we could not because of the reasons stated above."

The council say that all work on the road will be completed by November 26.

I just wish these companies would actually employ more than a couple a blokes, a mini digger and their dog when they're digging up our major routes! They took months doing a section of Chislehurst Road (A208) and we hardly ever saw more than one or two workmen present. There never seems to be any sense of urgency...

The spokeswoman cites Bromley's request for SGN not to start work whilst the bridge on Chislehurst Road is closed so why have they done so before it's reopened?

Blaming the Lundarn Olympics for failing to fix a problem in Orpington is a bit like blaming Xmas Holidays for not answering a letter sent in February.
