DETECTIVES in Bexley are urging the public to be vigilant following a burglary in Belvedere yesterday afternoon (October 9).

Over the last week two men have been visiting Lower Road knocking on doors and asking residents if they need any building work done.

Police believe the same men visited the home of an elderly couple at around 1pm yesterday.

The occupants did not answer the door because they had previously told the men, on two occasions, that they did not have any building work for them.

After getting no answer the two men forced entry and stole cash and jewellery before leaving via the front door.

Detective Inspector Steve Goodhew said: "We believe the pair burgled this home because they thought the occupants were out.

"The victims were shaken by the incident but not harmed in any way.

"We are asking the public to help us identify these burglars so we can apprehend them and bring them to justice.

"If men have knocked at your door, particularly in the area of Lower Road, asking if you have any building work for them, we want to hear from you."

Both men are white and described as being between 30 and 40 years old.

They were seen getting into a white van, believed to be a Ford Transit or Luton style.

Anyone with information should call 101 and ask for Bexley Burglary Squad or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
