PUPILS of one Bromley school will stand out from the crowd as they walk to and from school this month.

Raglan Primary School, in Raglan Road, is highlighting October’s international Walk to School month by wearing high visibility vests and armbands.

Fifty vests and enough armbands for each pupil were made available by housing construction firm Ward Homes for the worldwide event.

Teacher Bruce Robertson said: “We believe walking to school is important and try to encourage as many of our pupils as possible to walk to school in a safe and sensible fashion.

“It is great to see a developer support such a valuable initiative and we really appreciate the donation from Ward Homes.”

The school has run the initiative alongside Ward Homes for four years but Year 6 pupils have walked to the Raglan Road school every Wednesday for the last six years as part of the campaign.

According to statistics by Living Street, who set up the Walk to School month, around 50 per cent of children do not walk to school regularly with 41 per cent being taken in cars.

Mr Robertson said: “By increasing physical activity every day, not only is it benefitting the pupils health, the pupils have the opportunity to burn off some energy before the school day begins.”

“We can also reduce congestion outside the school gates.”
