Kent County Councillor Bryan Sweetland attacks £50,000 Gravesham toilets

A KENT County Councillor has attacked as "extremely alarming" a decision to spend £50,000 on "the most expensive loos in Kent".

Tory councillor Bryan Sweetland said the plan by Gravesham Council to spend the cash on the civic centre toilets shared with the Woodville Theatre in Gravesend, was "dodgy".

He added: "Despite the recession the council can still find £50,000 to spend on new toilets in the civic centre.

"Coming just a week after announcing the appointment of a £150,000 full time chief executive this news is extremely alarming.

"This is just the latest in a long list of dodgy decisions by the left wing council and again Gravesham’s council tax payers, shoppers and council house tenants will be picking up the bill through huge increases in parking charges, rents and rates.

"These will surely be the most expensive loos in Kent."

But Gravesham Council leader Cllr John Burden claimed the decision related to a lack of investment by Cllr Sweetland's Conservative group when it ran the council from 2007 to 2011.

He said: "It is total incompetence on his part and he should concentrate on doing his job properly.

"We have over 150,000 visitors per year and the toilets haven't been upgraded for at least 30 years, so that is less than one penny per person.

"It is a very good deal."

Using Bryan's logic, perhaps the street lights should all be turned off, that way council tax payers will see their bills drop. You have to pay for public services.
