Lewisham Black History Month launches at Deptford Lounge

BLACK History Month launched in Lewisham last week with an event at the Deptford Lounge.

The event included evening of Jamaican Quadrille dance, Trinidadian Calypso and Caribbean storytelling.

More than 80 people came along to the free event with a particular highlight being MC and storyteller Sandra Agard.

And it was just the start of more than 90 events happening across Lewisham borough to mark the month.

Deputy Mayor of Lewisham Cllr Alan Smith opened the event saying: "2012 has been a great year with black history being made in our London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games by the likes of Mo Farah and Usain Bolt’s unparalleled achievements.

"We’ve also seen the 50th year of Independence celebrations of Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. These are just some of the themes of numerous activities and events taking place across the borough throughout the month.

"There is something for everyone in Lewisham during Black History Month and I encourage everybody to take advantage of this and to join in the celebrations".

Yey! But I wish it was more advertised. It may well be, in local papers, but some of us do not receive any local papers through the door. I would love to attend some events, but do not know how to find out information. Any ideas anyone.?

How about some of Deptford's real history? Has Alan Smith ever heard of Christopher Marlowe?
