BINMEN and other workers staged a walkout in Bromley this morning after four members of staff were fired by Veolia Environmental Services yesterday (October 3).

Waste disposal lorries began work for the day at 10am more than three hours after their scheduled start after the protest.

Around 100 workers stood outside the depot in Baths Road protesting about the sackings.

A trade union representative from UNITE is currently in talks with Veolia to try and reach an agreement over the sacking. 

Workers want the four staff to be reinstated otherwise it is believed they might ballot for official action. 

The four staff were said to have been fired from the company, which collects household rubbish on behalf of Bromley Council, for gross misconduct.

This is believed to be linked to an incident where the four men were seen taking a bag of grass cuttings.

Just phoned the council to ask if the Churchfields Road recycle centre (the dump to you and me!) is open and they know nothing about the strike.
They said the dustbin lorry is running a bit behind time, and to ring back at 4pm if the rubbish isn't collected!
Talk about left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.

I find it hard to believe that a company like Veolia would just fire someone without reasonable grounds to do so, and when it comes to Gross Misconduct then you don't really have much of a leg to stand on. I am sure more will come out at some point.

In this day and age there must be more to the dismissal it is not simple anymore to terminate staff. However on the Bromley binmen sack anyone that strikes and give the jobs to someone who wants/ needs a job as the current staff are the worst, lazy bin men i have ever come across.

I believe grass cuttings "contaminate" general waste

You either take it to the dump, compost yourself or pay for a special bin

When people like us pay £60 a year extra to have our green waste collected. It's a bit annoying to find people giving the dustmen a tip to pick up theirs. This IS of course if they did. I hope if they do go on strike we will get a refund on this if we have to start taking it to the tip again.

A tip to the person that goes that extra yard always works for me. I tip my dustmen, and the postmen at Christmas as a norm. Always tip my hairdresser, my cab driver, and wait staff. Try it 'dag'.
Who needs to drive to a smelly dump on a Saturday morning when a few pounds to the dustmen does the trick.

Just be discreet.

Ok so grass cuttings 'contaminate' general waste - but its an elderly lady... i'm sure she has the ways and means to dispose of this herself... NOT!

well to be fair,if the old lady can manage to cut her grass, then surely she could manage to take it to the dump??
