PRIMARY school pupils in Greenwich have beaten the national average in their summer Key Stage 2 results.

In English, 88 percent of 11-year-olds gained the required Level 4 standard – compared with an 85 percent national average.

There were also 89 percent of pupils who scored this standard in Maths which tips them five percent above the national average.

The results, which were released at the end of last month, places Greenwich in the top quarter of local authorities in England.

Greenwich Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services Cllr Jackie Smith said: “This is great news and our teachers, pupils and parents are to be congratulated on an impressive set of results.

“These figures reflect the fact that our strategies to improve performance are making an impact.

“However, we will continue to work hard, in partnership with our primary schools, to improve the performance of our pupils at this crucial stage in their education.”

Superficially this sounds good, but the reality is that the national average is not a valid benchmark for performance. The reality is that teching is heavily focused KS2 tests while the broader development of children is neglected. As an example, my child's maths teacher was quite open about the kind of questions that would be asked and focused on practicing for those, but when she moved to secondary school it turned out that she had huge gaps in what she had learned compared to children from the neighbouring borough. As a result of this dumbing down Britain is dropping in objective international comparisons. If I remember correctly, UK is now below Slovakia. This is particularly important because today's school children and their future emplyers will face tough global competition. If we don't want to end up as a second tier nation we must do much better.
