VOLUNTEERS have planted a bee friendly meadow in Hither Green, to help support the creatures whose numbers are plummeting.

Lewisham Friends of the Earth joined up with Lewisham Community Gardens at St Mungo’s homeless centre to prepare the open space.

Also screening a film about the insects plight at Hither Green cinema, the action was part of a campaign called The Bee Cause.

Bees are currently suffering due to a raft of problems including modern farming methods and pesticides.

Lewisham Friends of the Earth coordinator Ted Burke said: "This is all part of our campaign to put the plight of the humble bee on the government agenda.

"We want David Cameron to introduce a National Bee Action Plan, and doing something positive in our own back yard is the best place to start."
