Former mayor and handy cricketer George Naylor remembered at Gravesend Cricket Club dinner

A FORMER town mayor and handy cricketer has been remembered at a special Gravesend Cricket Club dinner.

A framed picture of George Naylor, appointed Mayor of Gravesend in November 1903, was presented to local historian Christoph Bull by club chairman Pat Harlow. 

The presentation was made during a benefit lunch for Ashes winning wicketkeeper Geraint Jones at Gravesend Cricket Club on Sunday (SEPT 23).

There were 200 guests at the event, including five Test players and 20 first class players from Kent, Essex and Durham.

Mr Bull said: "We had no picture of George Naylor within the Gravesend Library’s collection of over 20,000 illustrations and it will be now be available for the public to view as part of the library’s popular local history service."

George Naylor was a capable batsman for Gravesend as well as a local politician who promoted improvement works and supported spending ratepayers’ money on improving electricity supplies and building a swimming pool

Pat Harlow said: "We realized that the photograph should be available to be seen by more than just our members and at 109 years old we became edgy about its safe keeping and preservation."
