DARTFORD MP Gareth Johnson has told the House of Commons how the Mary Portas Grant has benefited the town.

Speaking during communities and local government oral questions on September 17, he told the House the win has “encouraged a large number of organisations to consider putting help and expertise into Dartford.”

He also praised Dartford Council, adding “such a proactive response from local councils will help to ensure a successful future for our high streets.”

Dartford was one of 12 towns selected from 400 to be awarded a Portas Grant in May, which will be used to regenerate the high street.

Leader of Dartford Council Councillor Jeremy Kite said: “Some poured cold water on the Portas initiative, saying it was ‘too small’ or ‘too late’ but the truth is this relatively small initiative has opened some very big doors for our town and residents and shoppers will soon see the benefits.”
