Extra parking spaces are being put in to cope with loss of Bromley's Westmoreland Road car park

PLANS are afoot to make sure there is enough parking in Bromley town centre when the Westmoreland Road car park closes.

It is set to shut for the last time later this autumn before being demolished to make way for a hotel, cinema and housing complex – including a 400 space car park.

To compensate for the loss of the 581 spaces the council is carrying out works in the town centre.

Improvements are being carried out in The Hill, Beckenham Lane, to add an extra 120 spaces.

This work is expected to be finished by December.

Pay and display bays will be installed in Elmfield Road and Walters Yard to give another 100 spaces.

And the St Blaise car park, behind the Civic Centre, is planned to be opened for public use at weekends.

Portfolio holder for renewal and recreation Councillor Peter Morgan said: “We need to guarantee plenty of convenient parking facilities as it ensures that residents, shoppers, commuters and visitors have an enjoyable visit to our town.

“Investments made this year will ensure we have enough parking in the town centre throughout the development period and in time for the all important Christmas shopping season.

“This heralds the start of a new phase for our town centre enhancing the leisure offer and positioning Bromley well for the future.”

The council will be putting electronic car parking signs up in time for Christmas to tell motorists where spaces are available.

And a planning application has been submitted for a 30 space car park in Mitre Close.
