Lewisham firefighters hold open day and demonstrations
CROWDS of people packed their local fire station for its open day, seeing the full impact of a road traffic accident.
Along with the stalls and entertainment, Lewisham fire station's White Watch team gave visitors a demonstration of how they operate.
Fire fighter Jon Forsdyke explained: "We showed , very visually, the dangers of deep fat frying and the effects of applying water to such a fire.
"We ran a line drill, lowering one of our fire-fighters from the top of our drill tower, to rescue the casualty. There were also traffic accident demonstrations by firefighters with the help of St John Ambulance crews, extricating a casualty from a car by removing the roof."
Around £500 was raised for the station's benevolent fund on a day which also celebrated the work of crew manager Alan Carlile, who will soon retire after 33 years.
He marked the occasion by being put in stocks and pelted with wet sponges.
