Grove Park Conservative councillor David Britton defects to Labour

IN a shock move, one of Lewisham's only Tory councillors has defected to the Labour Party over government austerity measures.

Grove Park ward's Councillor David Britton, a former Conservative group leader who joined the local authority in 1998, said he had found his previous position "impossible".

He said: "The policies of this government are damaging the lives of the most needy and that is not what I am in politics to do. 

"I find it impossible to continue to defend the government to the people that I have represented on the council since 1998." 

He added: "This decision has been difficult to make, but in the end my political principles have guided me to joining the Labour Party."

The decision leaves Lewisham Conservatives with only one councillor - fellow Grove Park representative Councillor Christine Allison.

A Conservative spokesman said: "Following his admission that he has held discussions with the Labour Party with the stated intention of joining them, Cllr.David Britton has been expelled from the Conservative Party and from the Conservative Group on Lewisham Council."

I can se why someone would do this. It's much easier to have as your message to people what benefits they might be able to claim than telling them the truth about our children ending up paying for our generation's excessive spending for most of their lives.

tory labour tory lib dem lib dem tory they are all the same just different names they all say one thing before being elected then do the opposite once elected .. in todays sun it said more babies are being born to foreign born mothers that british women! .. go figure! .. we never asked for any of this .. its a complete waste of time voting for any of these mainstream politicians who are now on the same level of non/trust as "bankers" { their friends } immigration/crime/an
d massive levels of over crowding seem to be of non importance to these people!

...indeed 'e.m.' the daily wail covers some of those points as well... as for bed-hopping from the conservative party to the labour party... it shows you what these bunch of stuffed-shirts are really like!! labour were diabolical in power!! the coalition are having our soldiers being killed in foreign wars that tony blair and bush started!! but hey, most people know that even more army recruitement offices have sprung-up in unemployed 'hot-spots' areas across the country ? ...just keep churning-out more soldiers - to replace those killed in tony blairs war!! i'd rather spoil my ballot-form than vote for labour-conservative-
lib-dumbs!! rofl!!
