A STABBING outside a nightclub in New Cross this morning is ‘not a shock’, according to residents.

The 19-year-old victim remains critically ill in hospital after being stabbed near to The Venue, at the corner of Clifton Rise and New Cross Road, at about 3.30am today (September 16).

Police cordoned off the street from Clifton Rise to the ReynA restaurant near Pagnell Street while forensics officers worked at the scene.

Shop assistant Hilmi Rauf says he was not shocked to see police standing outside The Venue when he was locking up at Goldsmiths Wines at around 4am.

Mr Rauf said: “It is not the first time something like this has happened.

“Every month or maybe every two months I hear of someone getting stabbed round here, it’s not unusual.”

And first year Goldsmiths College anthropology student Laura Chapman, 19, said: “I’m not really shocked.

“Before I moved here I looked at the crime statistics and found out there have been quite a lot of stabbings and shootings in the area.”

Police have yet to arrest anyone in connection with the incident.
