Chess king - Arul Gupta
AN 11-YEAR-OLD boy has been crowned king of British chess after victory in an annual competition.
Arul Gupta secured victory at the 99th Chess Championships of the British Isles in the Under 11 category.
The competition saw 40 of the country's very best young players take to the board for five days of tough competition.
But it was Arul, a Year 7 pupil at Eltham College, who emerged as the overall winner after six victories out of seven matches - with a final match win clinching the title.
His head teacher Paul Anderson said: "We have been impressed by Arul’s competitive nature in chess before, but he showed real tenacity to clinch the British title this year."
