A CHARITY worker has been commended by the mayor for services to the community.

Mark Smith, 39, from Llanover Road, Woolwich, was nominated by members of the public after helping over 30 people off the streets and into accommodation.

Mr Smith carried out the duties for London Rescue Service, who respond to calls about vulnerable rough sleepers and dispatch volunteers to help them.

The scheme is run by Thames Reach, one of the UK’s leading homelessness charities. It aims to provide temporary shelter and support to street homeless.

Mayor of Greenwich Councillor David Grant provided Mr Smith with tickets to an event at the North Greenwich Arena, in recognition of his outreach work.

Mr Smith said: "I find it really rewarding to help people escape destitution on the streets and move into somewhere safe were they can get their lives back on track.

"It is fantastic to have this work recognised by the Mayor."
