A TEACHER who told pupils "anyone who worships on Sunday is basically worshipping the devil" and branded homosexuality a sin has been banned for two years.

Robert Haye was called-up before a professional conduct panel on July 17 because of comments he made to youngsters while working at Deptford Green school in 2010.

Along with his remarks on Sunday worship, he also told a Year 11 class that homosexuality was a life choice, disgusting and a sin.

Following his comments, a teaching assistant complained, sparking an internal investigation by the school.

But Mr Haye failed to cooperate with the investigation and even chatted with students about his disciplinary process, the panel heard.

The teacher, who represented himself at the hearing, told the panel his comments had been appropriate as many of the students were religious and what he said was based on biblical teaching.

He also argued no students had been distressed or offended by his comments,

But the panel ruled the allegations had been proved, saying in their report: "Mr Haye has shown a complete lack of insight into the inappropriateness of voicing his views in the way he did, given the influential role he himself recognises he had on the pupils in his care.

"His actions must be viewed seriously in that they showed a lack of respect of the rights, faiths and beliefs of others and we have concluded that there is a high likelihood that his behaviour will be repeated."

The panel recommended a prohibition order, backed by the Secretary of State, banning Mr Haye from teaching for a minimum of two years
