Tesco gets permission needed for Welling store
12:37pm Friday 6th July 2012 in News By Jim Palmer
PERMISSION has been granted which will allow Tesco to open another store in Welling.
The supermarket chain intends transform the ground floor of the closed The Duchess of Edinburgh pub in Upper Wickham Lane, and has been granted permission by Bexley Council’s planning committee to install air conditioning, condensers and signage.
The committee was not able to rule on whether or not Tesco could open a store at the site because the change of use to a retail outlet is permitted by Government planning policy.
Objections about Tesco taking over the store – equivalent to four shop widths - were received by the council before the applications were even submitted, and a total of 15 were sent.
Complainants said that Welling already had enough large stores and a new one would harm existing firms, as well as creating traffic and noise issues.
Bexley Civic Society had no objections to the specific planning applications, but told the council it “rejects the whole concept of another Tesco in Welling”.

If they had done that Tesco would have appealed, won and Bexley's council tax payers would have had to pay the appeal costs.
Do you really want that?

I still won't shop at Tescos.
Tescos don't care about communities as they are well known in buying properties and lands with no concrete intention to build etc to ensure no one new can come along and offer legitimater business competition for the clientelle...THE SHOPPER!
I agree, the way the article reads is that the Planning Comte. had no choice but we all know NS makes the occaisional error in reporting events!

Objective wrote:Imagine the large Tesco in Welling was a lap dancing club, the same for the smaller stores in Welling Bevedere and Erith and then this one was planned. The argument that the council couldn't refuse wouldn't wash. It's about a town's identity and as we know now, no company is too big to fail. The identity of Bexley has been lost. Pay your Council tax early and get club points. Not as daft as it sounds when every vacant premises is turned into a Tesco. I won't use any of them.
Read the article properly and you'll see the council appear to have had no choice in the matter. Unless that is you think they should have refused Tesco permission for air conditioning, condensers and signage?
