ARMED police officers have been called to the Dartford Council offices after a man inside claimed to have a knife.

Arriving at 11:54am this morning, the officers spent two hours negotiating with a 55-year-old man until the siege was brought to a close at around 2pm.

Members of the public inside the Civic Centre, in Home Gardens, were taken to a safe area during the two hour period.

The centre was closed while police dealt with the incident although it was not evacuated.

Police reports confirm the man has now been detained and will be taken to hospital, where he will be assessed.

Eye-witness reports suggested there were up to 10 police vehicles outside the Civic Centre.
