THE fountains in Gravesend’s Community Square will be switched on again, following the lifting of the hosepipe ban.

The water shortage meant the 10 spouts would have to remain dry all summer, but now Southern Water has removed the restrictions, the fountains will be tested and run regularly.

Although the water in the fountains is mainly re-circulated, there is a small loss of water and the tank is topped up from the mains supply.

It is expected the fountains will be turned back on this week and will run throughout the summer.

A Gravesham Council spokesman said: “The council took the responsible position not to turn the fountain on during the drought and did not apply for an exemption order.

“We’re relieved they can now go back on and will add to the enjoyment of Community Square.”
