FIREFIGHTERS will be talking to boat owners in Gravesend about fire safety on Friday (June 8).

The event will take place in the Canal Basin, Gravesend and will include information about the importance of having working smoke alarms and detectors.

Thames-side watch manager, Rob Parkin, said: "Boat fires are rare but they can spread rapidly.

"Not only will a smoke alarm alert you to fire on board but it will also give you time to escape and phone the fire service. "It really could make all the difference especially if your boat is in a remote location with difficult access.

"Spending some time identifying hazards that could lead to a fire could save your boat, or even your life."

Crews will also be giving out free smoke alarms.

stay safe afloat

- Smoke alarms – If you sleep aboard, you need to have a fitted and working smoke alarm.

- Carbon monoxide and gas detectors – these are necessary when using gas and solid fuel appliances.

- Fuel – Only carry spare petrol if necessary. This should be stored on-deck in a self-draining locker. Never re-fuel near naked flames or with engines running.

- Gas – Ensure appliances are properly fitted, with cylinders stored secure and upright in a self-draining locker.

- Electrics – Ensure all systems are professionally fitted and turn off as much as possible when not on board.

- Fires, heaters and cooking appliances – Never leave unattended when lit. Ensure flues are kept clear and the appliance well secured to a fireproof bulkhead.

- Insurance – Your boat should be fully insured and documents kept in a fire-proof container.
