PLANS to turn a "problem site" in Swanley into a quad bike complex have left residents fearing noise pollution and traffic congestion.

The application for two tracks for 50cc quad bikes at Veitchii Barn in New Barn Road was submitted by Lawrence White, who runs Dartford’s Boys Motor Toys Limited.

It is intended one of the tracks will be smaller and used for training.

A 25 space car park in also on the cards.

Currently, the site is being used to store old cars and clearance goods and it is believed the proposals will regenerate the area.

However, residents are concerned about noise and increased traffic flow.

Janet Sauders, 73, lives around 150m from the proposed site in Woodgers Grove The great-grandmother of two said: "It’s the noise I object to.

"For a long time, older children have needed something, but why not a bowling alley- that’s fairly quiet.

"We can already hear Brands Hatch and Canada Heights."

Shirley Alston, 77, has lived in nearby Swanley Lane for 48 years and also objects to the proposals.

The grandmother-of-five said: "We live on a main road parallel to the M25 and we get so much heavy traffic.

"The only peace and quiet we get is in the back garden but now we’ll be able to hear the bikes."

But Mr White says a survey that was carried out shows noise pollution will be minimal.

He said: "The application is to have eight battery operated bikes- they are not loud and we have had a noise survey done.

"And it is not a spectator site so the amount of traffic will be minimal."

He added: "I want to turn this problem site into something children, aged up to 12, can use.

"It’s an opportunity for them to get involved in something outside the house, not sitting infront of the TV, wii or playstation.

"There’s been rubbish that’s been left behind on the site from previous tenants.

“It’s not very picturesque.

“We want to clear it up, landscape it and start again.”

A decision on the application is expected to be made on July 6.
