A MUSIC video shot in Beckenham on a £100 budget is creating a stir in the music industry.

Twenty two-year-old Darren Baba, aka Bantah, and 27-year-old filmmaker Katherine Evans, aka Puff, have seen their first track Geezer Bruv listed as hot by radio station XFM, tweeted by Zoo magazine and offered a slot on playlists at high-end nightclubs.

The pair, who have never previously worked in the music industry, have performed at Proud2 in Greenwich and have gigs lined up at Epsom Derby and a series of clubs. They are in talks with record labels about releasing the song.

Darren, who grew up in Beckenham and went to Kelsey Park School before working as an actor and casting agent in films, said: "There are lots of things that have come up, it is quite exciting it has all come from Beckenham.

"I have worked with some big names in film, but they have never come to Beckenham.

"It is such a great town and a great place to be. I am very patriotic about it in that sense."

The song was born when Darren and Katherine, who know each other through their film work, were at a party in Beckenham in December and "winding each other up". When Katherine joked about Darren’s drunken chat-up lines, he retorted: "It don’t matter love, ‘cos I’m a geezer bruv."

Darren said: "We looked at each other in that moment - like an epiphany - and started chanting it, having a laugh.

"Soon the whole party was chanting it.

"The next day we got back on the phone and came back to it and spent the next five hours writing the rest of the lyrics and the treatment for the video."

The song was recorded a week later with producer STX Audio and two weeks later, on January 2, they were filming a video in Beckenham.

Darren said filming was "amazing" with friends, family and industry contacts lending a hand to make the video and venues such as Clock House barbers, The Westbec and The Spa all welcoming the chance to be in a music video.

Darren puts the song’s success down to his drive and a grasp of the zeitgeist.

He said: "Being a geezer is very current at the moment.

"With the Olympics coming to London, what better way is there to celebrate being a Londoner?

"Everyone loves a geezer, we are talking about everyday geezers doing everyday things."
