TEN people were evacuated from their homes last night when a wall and roof collapsed.

London Fire Brigade was called at 6.55pm last night (May 27) to flats above a shop, in Broadway, Bexleyheath.

A small part of the exterior wall on the second floor and a small part of the roof collapsed.

Firefighters evacuated 10 people as a precaution.

Two fire engines and around 20 firefighters left the scene by 10.30pm.

The cause is under investigation.

A Bexley Council spokeswoman said: "On Sunday (May 27) evening the London Fire Brigade and Police were called to a building in danger of collapse at 296A Broadway, Bexleyheath.

"Bexley Council's building surveyor was called to the scene to assess the safety of the building.

"Several properties adjoining the premises were evacuated with assistance from the Council's Emergency Planning Team.

"The Police closed the Broadway between Devonshire Road and Sandford Road. Harcourt Road was closed from the Broadway to the alleyway to the rear of the shops.

"Part of the roof of the building is still dangerous and some of Harcourt Road has been fenced off allowing residents to have access and for the owner of the collapsed premises to repair the damage. The Broadway side of the premises is unaffected."

She added: "There were no casualties. Apart from one other residential property adjoining the flat everyone else has been allowed back into their homes. Residents from this property made their own accommodation arrangements. The Broadway was reopened at 10.45pm.

"The council kept residents and businesses informed throughout the ongoing situation."
