A BEDROOM was destroyed after a fire broke out in a Gravesend house yesterday evening (May 16).
Firefighters from Thames-side and Swanscombe were called to Russell Road at around 8.20pm and managed to stop flames spreading to any other room in the property.
It is believed the fire started in a damaged, old-fashioned extension lead that had been left on.
Crews believe it began smouldering and started a slow-burning fire in the bedroom carpet.
There was slight smoke damage to the rest of the two-storey home.
A set of working smoke alarms meant the homeowner was able to get out of the house quickly and was not injured.
Crew Manager Tim Green said: “Many accidental fires begin with an electrical appliance, so it’s really important you make sure all your electrical appliances are in good working order and not used if they are damaged.”
