Zip it: What did Prince Philip say to lady in red?

The lady in red The lady in red

As people respectfully stood in line for their opportunity to meet the Queen and her husband in Bromley yesterday, one lady may not have considered the reaction her choice of outfit would cause.

As he approached the attractive blonde, Prince Philip said: “I would get arrested if I unzipped that dress.”

The lady has a bemused expression as Prince Philip moves down the line

And News Shopper reader Pam Shaw got in touch to tell us about her elderly mother’s brief exchange with the Duke of Edinburgh.

Having waited in the cold for some time Mrs Shaw’s mum, Barbara Dubery from Beckenham, was offered a foil blanket by a member of council staff.

As he passed by, Prince Philip spotted Mrs Dubery, who will be 90 on Saturday (May 19), and said: “Are they going to put you in the oven next?”

No offence was taken though as Mrs Shaw said the remark “made her day”.

Barbara Dubery in her foil blanket

Prince Philip’s gaffes

Some of the things the Duke of Edinburgh is reported to have said over the years that have hit the headlines.

To a driving instructor in Scotland: “How do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to get them through the test?”

To Elton John after hearing Elton had sold his Gold Aston Martin: “Oh, it’s you that owns that ghastly car – we often see it when driving to Windsor Castle.”

On the London Traffic Debate: “The problem with London is the tourists. They cause the congestion. If we could just stop tourism, we could stop the congestion.”

To the President of Nigeria, dressed in traditional robes: “You look like you’re ready for bed.”

To the matron of a hospital in the Caribbean: “You have mosquitoes. I have the Press.”

Yes you sound very classy "'er Maj's day". You are also jumping to conclusions about a woman who has done nothing wrong here. Additionally, as a blonde myself, I take offence to your combination of 'blonde' and 'bimbo'. It was very inappropriate for Philip to have said this to the woman. Shouldn't you be targeting him with your malicious comments? No, of course not. He's a man therefore he must be a 'silly old fool' and she must be something much worse, a 'bimbo'. Your sexist remarks are disgusting.

Well said. The blonde lady has done nothing at all to warrant such abuse, other than be in a picture in the NS.

I really hope she doesn't find out about your horrible comment.

I hope she rubs her doctorate in nuclear physics right in your face!

Why do you think I care ?

I think ( if its OK with you ) this young lady was inappropriately dressed for the occasion of perhaps meeting the Queen.

Personally, I think the very elegant lady in 'tin foil' steals the show (with a wicked one liner from Prince Philip). Mrs Dubery, I hope you had a super day and many happy returns for this Saturday. You certainly look extremely well and I'd never of guessed you were going to be 90.

Bizzymum I couldn't agree more, the older generation don't need to be told about respect, or how to dress for a Royal occasion.

ardboe77 the offended, you idiot. If I offended you I take that as a compliment, thank you.

God save the Queen.

It's too late for Ron to learn about respect. Did he give any thought to the amount of work this young lady put in to ensuring the day went smoothly, or even how she'd feel about his unkind comments. As part of the day's theme was fashion her dress was entirely suitable, although some old people may not appreciate that. How disrespectful are the remarks about the Queen's husband or the way he refers to Her Majesty> I agree that he's malicious; a rather bitter old man.

Ron, there is only a couple of words to describe an individual like yourself. Immature & pathetic!!

You sit there on your computer being a keyboard warrior with your childish comments towards a woman just for what she is wearing. Is this what our community has come to with judging innocent young women who actually put their time & effort into making the day a success? There is more to a person than what they choose to wear & feel comfortable in.

Carry on hiding behind your computer & I will have great enjoyment knowing my 6 year old daughter acts & behaves more grown up than youself.

Well done to everyone that took part helping Bromley with the day

It's not a complete copy and paste did you have trouble reading it? Do you not see the irony of what you are saying ?

Low life scum - Sticks and stones. Did your 6 year old help you with that?

So point out where I slated innocent people helping the community? What has peoples criminal background got to do with helping the community? I take it you completed a criminal background check on everyone. Just that your statement about innocent people could be very wrong.

Aww bless Ron & the wall must be secret lovers both agreeing with the way they slate a woman for what she wears. Thats not opinion at all. I was raised the CORRECT way that if you have something bad to say about someone then keep it to yourself. Fools like you pair get a buzz out of "trying" to make yourselves look better. Maybe try turning your negative comments into positive ones then Bromley would be a better place. I can see now why your sad lonely single men due to your sexism for NO reason. You automatically assume because a female is blonde she is a bimbo. Well maybe get your FACTS straight before you comment. Maybe get your lazy rear ends off your chair & you do a better job if her choice of clothing was not to your taste.

I'm starting to ask myself what's your angle in defending this young woman attire, what are you after Anthony ? I'm sure if you ask she would tell you where she purchased it.

At least your not a cave man.

If you saw a lady dressed like that in a restaurant and a comment like that was made im sure there would be a lot of people with something to say.

It doesnt matter what you wear as long as your polite and friendly.

The lady is hardly wearing a mini skirt and a boob tube.

Not that i agreed with the all the road closures etc due to her visit.

BUT why does everything have to turn personal on here.

Dr Lester Piggott says...
10:17pm Thu 17 May 12

Now here's my two penneth on this subject. I think some of you need to cut our friend Ron a little slack here. You have to remember, I'm guessing 1952 is his birth year ( sorry if I'm wrong Ron ), people from that era in time dress lets say a little more sober than todays youngsters. Just look at Charles and Camilla as an example, both from that era in time.
I had to attend a friends funeral a while back and to be honest I was shocked at how some young people dressed for the occasion. Now I'm about 10 years younger than Ron, but I have to admit I raised my eyebrows at a few young ladies dress for a funeral. Times have changed and what's seen as OK today would have been seen as wrong in yesteryear, and for some people who grew up then.

AnthonyKelly says...
7:57am Fri 18 May 12

Dr Lester I see your point but the Queen visiting Bromley & a funeral are 2 totally different things & cannot be compared together. I understand you are talking about the clothing rather than the situation itself. But some people need to move with the times. But I am sorry, what she was wearing may of not been to certain peoples tastes but what is acceptable?? & more to the point why we are all annoyed is due to his rude & sexist comments saying she's a blonde bimbo etc. How can someone assume such rubbish just from the clothes she chose to wear? Its barmy!

bnorther says...

People are calling her a blonde bimbo. But according to the Daily Mail she is a graduate from the London School of Economics.

bim·bo
Noun:
derogatory. An attractive but empty-headed young woman, esp.

I can't see how a graduate from a Russell Group University is a Bimbo.

This is exactly my point. The low life jumping to conclusions just because of the clothes she is wearing. There is more to a people than the clothes they wear or where they may shop. It is just a sad old fool who is jealous of this lady so he has to make nasty comments just to make himself look better but hasn't worked very well

bnorther, well the Daily Mail must be right, I cant believe anyone with half an ounce of common sense reads that comic. It says a lot about you.

I was at this event and as far as I could see no one else was dressed like this young woman. She could of worn a LBD and been less conspicuous out of respect for the Queen. That of course would not of achieved the attention this bim-- girl was seeking now would it.

AnthonyKelly - You might find that the moral standards you hold dear don't apply in other societies. Who could imagine such a situation? Maybe you should join the internet Police.

I'm sure you agree in Freedom of Speech for things that you agree with. But like to shout down other's those opinions differ to yours.

Irony is lost on you in a big big way. You're one of the biggest hypocrites I have ever had the misfortune to read comments from. You say you have virtues, moral and principles. Yet with every comment proved that they mean nothing. For example ........ " I was raised the CORRECT way that if you have something bad to say about someone then keep it to yourself." You then start name calling in your other posts. You're a fail !

Do you really think in you pink fluffy bubble that a few bad words (in your opinion) in some small corner of the internet will some how disable Bromley and bring it crashing down ?

I don't like the idea of someone telling others what they can and can't say, what opinions they can and can't hold. Whether I agree or disagree with someone's view on a matter, I believe they have the same right to hold that view as I do.
