A DEAL between Gillingham Football Club and North West Kent College means talented young footballers in Dartford and Gravesend will benefit from academic study.

The scheme will see 16 to 18-year-olds study sports-related qualifications at the college’s Dartford campus while playing in Gills colours in the Conference Youth League.

Gillingham FC academy manager Darren Hare said: "I’m excited about the prospect of working with North West Kent College and when I was approached with the opportunity I really felt it was something we needed to do.

"Our recruitment of players extends all over Kent but it will enhance our program to be able to have a base in north Kent, on the outskirts of London, to give us a chance of competing with the bigger clubs."

He added: "If we can get one or two to make the transition from this college academy to our own apprenticeship programme, we will be delighted."
