THE first Battalion Display for 20 years was presented by the Boys Brigade and Girls Association in Wilmington on Saturday (April 28).

More than 300 youngsters from the West Kent Battalion of the brigade celebrated both the Olympic Games and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in a spectacular two-hour display at Wilmington Grammar School for Girls.

Featuring an abundance of entertaining acts based around an Olympic and jubilee theme, the youngsters performed live music, circus skills and gymnastics to a crowd of 250.

West Kent Battalion president Malcolm Smith wrote to the Queen, who is the patron of the Boys Brigade, and read out a reply he received from her before the display.

Mr Smith said: “It’s fantastic to see the young people within the Boys Brigade and the Girls Association being able to reach good standards of achievement.

“They put on a brilliant show and the audience absolutely loved it.”

There are 11 Boys Brigade and Girls Association companies within the West Kent Battalion, spread throughout the boroughs of Bexley, Greenwich and Lewisham.
