THE EX-WIFE of a man standing trial for attempted murder told “wicked lies” during police interview, court hears.

Sukhuinder Kaur, who was previously married to defendant Girdaware Singh Basra, told jurors she was pressured into lying to police.

She blamed her new husband Resham Singh throughout, claiming he asked her “not to tell the truth” in order to prevent his involvement in the attack from becoming known.

54-year-old Girdaware Singh Basra, of Beaumont Drive in Northfleet, denies the attempted murder of his ex-wife’s new partner, Mr Singh on October 27 last year.

He also denies an alternative charge of wounding with intent and breaching a restraining order.

Mrs Kaur appeared in the dock with a translator for a second day of intense grilling from both the prosecution and Basra’s defence lawyer at Maidstone Crown Court today (April 26).

She claims the incident occurred as the family were celebrating Diwali in Basra’s home, when her current husband burst into Basra’s bedroom as Mrs Kaur was talking with him.

Here, she says Mr Singh pushed and punched Basra before grabbing hold of his ear with his teeth.

She says Basra was screaming out in pain and grabbed hold of a lamp, with which he hit Mr Singh continually until he let go of his ear.

The court later heard how Mrs Kaur admitted Mr Singh had been the aggressor in the incident.

Her story differs to what she told police during an interview in October, when she claimed wounds on her husband’s head were the result of a street robbery in Gravesend.

When questioned by the prosecution, she admitted this story had been “a complete lie.”

During the recorded interview, she initially told police: “A man came running after us and he grabbed Resham from behind by his collar and pulled him backwards.

“I then saw a cleaver in the male’s right hand which was about six inches long and four inches wide which he was holding by the handle.

“I tried to push the man away but the man went to hit Resham in the head with the cleaver.”

Mrs Kaur admitted she “lied to the police because she was trying to protect her husband.”

Prosecution lawyer Richard Barton told her “these were wicked lies you were telling.”

Jurors were also told how Mrs Kaur contacted police in November last year informing them she no longer wanted to give evidence in the case on the basis that it could affect her children.

She told police then: “My children love their father very much.

“He has never even told them off, I do not want to tear my family apart.”

The court also heard Mr Singh, with whom Mrs Kaur still lives, disappeared two days before the start of the trial (April 21) and she does not know where he has gone.

The trial continues.
