BROMLEY residents are recycling more than ever, with less than a quarter of waste now going to landfill.
Latest figures show 76 per cent of household waste is now being recycled, composted or converted into energy.
Portfolio holder for the environment Councillor Colin Smith said: “For the first time ever in Bromley, we are now recycling more refuse than we throw away, and of the balance that is left over, we are now recycling more than half of that too by creating energy through heat to power, rather than sending it to landfill.
“Recycling more than three quarters of the borough’s household waste means last year the council avoided paying government landfill charges of more than £5million.”
Last year Bromley recycled or composted 23,710 more tonnes of waste than it sent to landfill, while 5,800 more tonnes were converted into energy than was sent to landfill.
