A SCOUT group is celebrating after volunteers helped transform their new hut.

The 1st Northfleet Scout Group, which was based at Dallen Hall, in Hive Lane, Northfleet, was formed in 1909 and is one of the oldest groups in the UK.

But its landlord, Land Industries, plans to redevelop the area and asked the group to find an alternative venue.

After an 18 month search they found a disused ex-scout hut in St Marks Avenue, Gravesend - around two miles away.

Chairman of the group, Terry Annable, said: "Over nine months my team of 19 parents and leaders have been refurbishing the hall and grounds to get us back in.

"They have been absolutely brilliant. They gave up a lot of their free time but really enjoyed it and we've had a laugh."

The 66-year-old added: "It's not completely ready but acceptable to move in to."

It was estimated that the cost of refurbishing the ex-scout hut would be £20,000 and the group had to raise the cash themselves.

Mr Annable said: "By beg, borrowing and using recycled materials we are half way there."

Coca-Cola paid for the flooring to be replaced and gave the group a £500 donation and a mountain bike to raffle.

Meanwhile Bluewater's ice skating rink from Christmas also donated their flooring.

The group still wants the roof replaced at a cost of £2,500 and graffiti removed.

Around 50 children belong to the group as well as a marching drum and bugle band.

It will be holding an open day at the new hut on Saturday (April 28) from 2pm to 4pm.

It will include displays, a BBQ, games, marching band and a samba band from Gravesend Grammar School for Boys.
