After a 1-1 draw at Bury Town on Saturday, the promotion hopes of Cray Wanderers are mathematically still alive for this season, but only just.

Cray now occupy 9th place, on 65 points, and although they have a game in hand on most of the clubs above them, their maximum possible total of 71 points may be insufficient to reach 5th place in the table, to achieve a play-off place.

Nevertheless on Tuesday night at home to Lowestoft Town, who are placed 3rd and have already secured a play-off place, the Wands have every incentive to go for a win before they meet relegated Horsham at Hayes Lane on the final Saturday of the season.

For injury-hit Cray a point at 4th-placed Bury Town was a commendable effort on Saturday, but a win was badly needed and the Wands couldn't turn their second half domination into goals.

Andy Walker saved from home forwards Sam Reed and Billy Clark before Cray's first effort at goal was a Danny Phillips shot that went wide.

The game flashed into life with two goals inside a minute, starting with Lee Reed sending the ball in for Lee Smith to fire past Walker on 36 minutes.

Cray were level a minute later when Lewis Perkins tucked away the loose ball when Jamie Darvill's shot came back off the goalkeeper.

Cray had more possession in the second half and pushed forward in numbers, forcing Bury to play on the break.

The home supporters singled out Cray's skilful midfielder Danny Phillips as best player on the field, but he couldn't magic a late goal for the Wands who now play Lowestoft Town at home on Tuesday night (7.45pm) followed by Horsham at home on Saturday (3pm).
