BROMLEY’S mayor Councillor David McBride was on hand to help a shopping centre with the last of the shoeboxes donated for its appeal.

The Walnuts in Orpington had hoped to collect 200 shoeboxes for Operation Shoebox to be sent to service men and women around the globe including Afghanistan.

But the appeal was so popular it was extended until the start of the month and saw more than 600 boxes sent overseas.

Centre manager Martin Price said: “I’m delighted at the response that we have had.

“I have had the pleasure of seeing three of these appeals and it never ceases to amaze me quite how generous the people of Orpington are.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to our shoppers for all of the boxes they have donated.

“I’m sure the troops will appreciate every one of them.”
