A WITNESS has described hearing “blood-curdling” screams as a teenager plunged 17 storeys to her death.

The woman, believed to be 18, fell from the bedroom window of a flat in Mulgrave Road at around 9.30am today (April 10), shortly after police entered to carry out an arrest inquiry regarding a recall to prison.

A man who lives opposite the block of flats and wished not to be named told News Shopper: "I heard screams coming from over there at around 9.15. I said to my wife that something was definitely going on.

“I heard someone screaming 'get off me, get off me' and then just this blood curdling scream."

"I was just about to walk my dog and then there was police everywhere."

Rex Keba who also lives on the 17th floor said he had seen the woman around but did not know her name.

He said: "I've seen her around. She came to see her boyfriend. I am surprised that something like this would happen.

"But there is no way that someone is surviving that fall – no one is surviving that drop."

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. She has yet to be formally identified and a post mortem examination is scheduled to take place tomorrow.

Lee Dowse who has lived on the 22nd floor in the block for eight years said: "The windows come up to about chest height.

"It isn't a window that you can just fall out of. It's a big window - you have to climb onto a ledge."

The 25-year-old added: "I might have seen her around, everyone is friendly. You don't often get the police called out to here.

"Her friend went straight after her and held her head and was cradling her until the police arrived.

"You could see she her pyjamas were all covered in mud."

Georgia Sheldrake,18, said: "It was really quite scary. We are on the same side as the window that she fell out of. We could see the tent."

A man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assisting an offender and was taken to a south London police station. He has now been bailed to return in early June pending further inquiries.
