GRAVESHAM Council will not switch on its new fountains for the whole of the summer due to the drought order.

The fountains, which were part of the Community Square attractions, do recycle their water but some is lost through evaporation.

Council leader, Councillor John Burden, said: "As the drought situation begins to bite and is likely to get far worse, we are encouraging everyone in the community to do their best.

"Every drop will count and the council will have to switch off the fountains and we urge everyone to look at their own use of water and find ways to save it."

The fountains were planned to have been switched on this week and run through the summer until October.

The council is urging people to comply with water-saving advice from the water companies.
