FAMILIES of staff will be treated to a fun day at the Sainsbury Distribution Centre in Dartford on Saturday (April 7).

Organised by DHL, which counts workers from 35 countries among its 1,200-strong workforce in the south east, the day will include escorted tours of the depot for families, activities, displays and the chance to meet neighbourhood police officers and firefighters.

Youngsters will be able to have a go on a fire engine while crews give advice on smoke alarms, fire safety and avoidance.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s partnership manager Samantha Jones said she hopes the event would help to break down barriers – both cultural and linguistic – which prevent families from speaking to the emergency services.

She said: “We want them to know that that they can talk to us and ask for free advice or help and this event is a great opportunity to strengthen our relationship with residents of all backgrounds.

“It looks set to be a great afternoon out for families with the chance for visitors to learn some vital fire safety tips."

Catherine Gray, of the Dartford Distribution Centre said: "All of the people who are coming along are really looking forward to the afternoon, and are especially excited about the opportunity to see a fire engine up close.

"The children are hoping to ask the firefighters all about their work, and of course, any safety messages are very welcome."
