AFTER countless delays, the lifts at Greenwich foot tunnel are finally operational again.

The lifts, along with those of its Woolwich counterpart, have both been closed since April 2009 while new lifts, stairs, lighting and CCTV were installed in a £11.5m project.

But the council's announcement means the Greenwich tunnel is now available by lift 24 hours a day, although the stairs may still see short-term closures.

Work is still taking place on both tunnels, along with the lifts at Woolwich, which had its stairs reopened to the public last December.

There was further good news at the weekend for people who would rather take a different route across the river, when the two towers of the cable car project were connected for the first time.
