GREENWICH will be the first London borough to participate in the Olympic torch relay.

Olympic organisers LOCOG have confirmed the torch will start its journey at the Prime Meridian Line in Greenwich Park at around 7.21am on July 21.

It will continue through Greenwich town centre, along east Greenwich and up through Eltham, before ending in Woolwich’s General Gordon Square and continuing on to Newham.

At around 7.21am on July 23, the torch will arrive in Lewisham. It will start its journey through the borough in Creekside, before being carried through Deptford, past the Stephen Lawrence Centre, and on through Lewisham High Street.

More than 90 minutes later it is expected to exchange hands in Bromley Road, at around 8.57, and be carried on through Bromley via Bromley Hill.

An average of 115 torchbearers a day will carry the Olympic Flame during its 8,000 mile journey around the UK.

It will arrive at the Olympic Stadium on July 27 for the lighting of the cauldron at the opening ceremony, signifying the official start of the London 2012 Games.

Greenwich Council leader Councillor Chris Roberts said: "Royal Greenwich is proud to be the first London borough to witness the fantastic spectacle of the Olympic Torch Relay.

"This announcement really brings the route to life and it will provide a unique chance for Greenwich residents to share in the excitement of the Olympic spirit as we mark the countdown to the 2012 Games."
