PEOPLE are being invited to become a tourist and explore the attractions and historic buildings of Eltham.

Greenwich Council's annual Be a Local Tourist Day takes place on March 18.

Activities range from a free tour of the town centre at 2pm starting from Eltham Palace, to guided tours of the 1664 Eltham lodge building, now home to Royal Blackheath Gold Club, from 10am, 11am and noon.

For people with proof of residence, Eltham Palace will allow people in for half price from 10am to 4pm.

Open days also take place at the fire station from 10.30am to 4pm, St John's Church in the High Street from 11.30am to 3pm, and Bob Hope Theatre in Wythfield Road from 11.30am to 3.30pm.

A selection of shops, bars and restaurants will be providing 10 per cent discounts.

Cabinet member for culture and the Olympics Councillor John Fahy said: "It is an exciting time to come and visit Eltham with the borough recently achieving royal status and the Olympics fast approaching.

"This is a chance for local people to explore and discover the hidden gems on their doorstep which may often be overlooked."
