Schoolboy's death 'not criminal'

THE death of a schoolboy who died after being hit with a cricket ball 'involved no criminality' according to police.

Kyle Rees, 16, died on 27 February after he was hit in the head by a cricket ball at Porchester School.

A 16-year-old was arrested and bailed on suspicion of manslaughter after the accident, but police say the investigation has been closed and no action will follow.

Detective Chief Inspector Kevin Connolly, the senior investigating officer, said: “Following a detailed and extensive investigation with support from teachers and pupils at Portchester School it has been determined that the death of 16-year-old Kyle Rees was a tragic accident involving no criminality.

“A 16-year-old boy arrested in connection with the incident has been released without charge and continues to receive support from the relevant authorities. Kyle's parents have been informed.”

Kyle, of Nortoft Road, Charminster, died in Southampton General Hospital. An inquest into his death was opened and adjourned three days later.
