A NEW leisure centre being built in Lewisham town centre will be called the Glass Mill.

The name refers to the glass facade that will front the new building and also reflects part of the borough’s history.

It is being built near the site of the old Lewisham Bridge Mill which was used in the middle of the 18th century by glass cutter Thomas Betts to manufacture chandeliers and decanters.

The Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock said: “We had a great response to our call for ideas and it was clear that many people felt the name should somehow reflect the history of the area.”

Lewisham’s cabinet member for community services Councillor Chris Best said: “We want to thank everyone who took the time to give us their ideas and they can be justly proud they made a real contribution to shaping the final name.”

Glass Mill leisure centre is due to open to the public in the first half of next year.
