Pickpocketing & stealing luggage from sleeping travellers is a common Gypsy practice. Whilst one is unlikely to be mugged on an overnight train in Romania, my friendly advice to solo travellers on overnight trains is to find a compartment which contains at least one other traveller. Since you obviously cannot tell the difference, Romanians are a latin people who superficially resemble Italians. Gypsies are a brown skinned people originally from India.Romanians do not like Gypsies any more than anybody else does.

Yes some Gypsies have huge homes in Romania, just as some Irish travellers are very wealthy. If you want to know how they get their money, you can always ask them, but I do not recommend it.
