CHRIS Powell insisted it was another point gained in Charlton’s quest for promotion as the league leaders drew 1-1 at Tranmere on Saturday.

Michael Morrison’s fourth goal of the season on the hour mark cancelled out Ryan Brunt’s first half opener.

And although Sheffield United managed to close the gap on the Addicks to six points, the Charlton boss believes his side did well to deal with the conditions on a difficult day in Merseyside.

He said: “We always knew coming here would be a test of our character and the conditions here aren’t exactly great.

“Tranmere is a tough place to come and I thought we handled the conditions well.

“The pitch here isn’t entirely flat and these things can conspire against you, but I’m happy with the players’ response.

“We were disappointed with the goal we conceded but to come back in a really tough arena, where they make it very difficult, was pleasing.

“It’s another point to the tally and we move on.

“We’re now on 68 points from 30 games and that’s a very good return.

“We just want to just keep going, the games are beginning to come thick and fast.”

In season where refereeing decisions have once again been under the spotlight, the Charlton boss was quick to praise official Andy Haines for awarding the Addicks their equaliser when Morrison headed against the underside of the bar.

“Fair play to the referee,” the Valley chief said.

“I think he was the one who gave it not his linesman, but the ball was completely over the line.

“You have to hope that they see it and luckily they did.

“During the World Cup when England played Germany the ball was clearly over the line and it wasn’t given, but I’m very glad that he spotted it.”

On the other hand, the Charlton manager believes his side could and maybe should have had a penalty when Danny Haynes was brought down by Rovers keeper Owain Fon-Williams.

Powell added: “Danny Haynes made a smart turn on the edge of the box and got away from Ian Goodison.

“He managed to toe it past the keeper and he went down, but the referee has only got one look at it and he decided that it wasn’t a penalty.

“In hindsight, we’ve looked at it after the game.

“We’ve got an argument to say it was, but it wasn’t to be and on another day it may be given.”

Shortly after the penalty claim, Haynes, who was making his first start for Charlton, had to go off injured on the hour with what looked like a hamstring injury to be replaced by Bradley Wright-Phillips.

The Charlton boss said: “Danny looked sharp, he was very lively and it was unfortunate he had to come off injured.

“He felt his hamstring slightly, we’ve got good players here chomping to be involved so as a precaution we took him off.”

On Wright-Phillips, Powell added: “Bradley had one or two situations, he linked up well, put a couple of good balls in, as well as being on the end of one or two crosses.

“He’s a quality player but I decided to start with Danny Haynes today.

“But Bradley is a good gaol scorer at this level and he’ll be chomping at the bit to be involved in the next game.”
