A MOTHER and daughter fled their house after unattended candles in one of the bedrooms set a cabinet alight.
Two crews of firefighters, one each from Bexley and Erith stations, were called to Rochester Drive in Bexleyheath at 11.30pm yesterday.
Watch manager Graham Uttley said: “The lady did the right thing in closing the bedroom door which contained the fire and the smoke, and they both escaped before we got there.
“She was elsewhere in the house and she did not have a smoke alarm upstairs. She realised when she heard something from the bedroom falling over.”
Firefighters used breathing apparatus to enter the bedroom and put the fire out.
Mr Uttley warned not to leave candles unattended and to make sure you have a working smoke alarm.
