Ladywell gypsy and traveller site rejected by mayor

Watergate School Watergate School

AS expected, last night Lewisham’s mayor decided against building a gypsy and traveller site at the end of a residential street.

It followed a report by officers confirming that Church Grove in Ladywell was too narrow for caravans with their towing vehicles, which could end up riding up on to the pavement.

The decision marks the end of a long but ultimately successful campaign from people living there, who had always argued there were concerns over access.

Lewisham Council, which currently has no dedicated traveller site and spent £11,000 on the Church Grove consultation, will now have to hunt for a new location.

The search is likely to look at privately owned places along with those in council hands.

Sir Steve Bullock also recommended finding an alternative use for the disused Watergate School, where the five-pitch site was intended to be located.

Why is it time and time again Lewisham waste money? It was evident all along that the road was too narrow. The 11k could have gone towards the properties Lewisham wanted to sell. And as for the site being a disused site, try building some properties that the Lewisham people desperately need, all you see is Lewisham selling off old properties to Housing associations with the council geeting a poultry amount back. What ever happened to all the money over the years from the sale of council housing stock? It never appeared to have gone back towards more housing. It's about time Bullock and his cronies look out for Lewisham people and get away from this SELL SELL SELL nonsense! . And who will get the majority of places when finished from the council estate that was flattened in Bell Green? Private or those that have been on the housing list for two minutes. Treat everyone fairly, for what I have seen and heard from people over the years, it's beyond belief that the Council has not been done for discrimination!
