BEXLEY Council is urging people to stay off ice covered lakes in the borough.

Despite warning signs, youths have been seen cycling on the frozen lake at Lamorbey Park in Sidcup.

Dog owners have also been seen throwing objects out onto the ice for their dog to retrieve.

On February 5 firefighters were called out to rescue a dog which had gone through the ice into the water at Danson Lake.

The dog managed to make its own way to safety.

Council workers have since been out to break the ice on Danson and Lamorbey lakes with a JCB.

Despite milder weather arriving, the lake ice is expected to be around for a while, especially as some sections of ice on Danson Lake were up to nine inches thick during the cold weather.

Cabinet member for the environment, Councillor Gareth Bacon, said: "I urge people to take notice of the warning signs and stay off the ice. You might think it looks thick enough to withstand your weight, or that of a dog, but these things are deceptive.

"The situation has been changing very rapidly and this means that sections of ice that were thick can now be as little as an inch deep."
